Australian Pacific Touring Highlights of Alice Springs
Spend the afternoon discovering the highlights of Australia's famous outback town, Alice Springs.
ItineraryDepart: 2.00 p.m. Return: 5.30 p.m
Situated close to the very centre of Australia, Alice Springs is the country's best-known outback town. Originally settled as a post along the route of the Overland Telegraph Line, today it's a lively town full of things to see and do. On this half day tour of the highlights of 'The Alice' you'll visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service Base and the School of the Air, two uniquely Australian organisations that provide medical care and education respectively to people in remote areas. The Royal Flying Doctor Service was established in 1928 and is still active today and providing outback residents with the 'mantle of safety' envisaged by Reverend John Flynn. Enjoy panoramic views of the township and the rugged MacDonnell Ranges from atop Anzac Hill. See the generally dry Todd River 'running' through the town and view the old Alice Springs Telegraph Station, established in 1872. For 60 years it served as part of the Overland Telegraph Line relaying messages between Darwin and Adelaide, before it was turned into a school for Aboriginal children. Visit Mbantua (Aboriginal Cultural Centre) and gain an insight into the history of the local Aboriginal people. Return to your hotel.
